Louisiana State Motorcycle Laws
Traveling
from coast to coast and state to state is not at all uncommon anymore,
but when going by motorcycle, it is smart to be aware of the rules of
the state before you cross the line. The American Motorcyclist Association,
(AMA), maintains a complete on line list of motorcycle rules and
updates it frequently for easy access. It is a great resource to study
before planning any trip across state lines. And, if one lives in
Louisiana, it is a great site to use to refresh oneself of the traffic
laws. Current Louisiana laws that apply to riders on the roads of
Louisiana are:
- Helmet IS required by law
- State funded rider education is available for eligible applicants
- Eye protection IS required by law unless equipped with windscreen
- Modulating headlights are permitted
- Passenger seat and footrests are required if carrying a passenger
- Passenger age restrictions provides that a child at least 5 years of age or older is only authorized to be a passenger on a motorcycle if such child is properly seated and is wearing an approved safety helmet
- There are no restrictions on speakers or radar detectors
- Turn signals are not required
- For mufflers and maximum sound levels, there are no acoustical criteria
- Compulsory liability insurance limits will increase from 20-25-20 to 25-15-35 on January 1, 2010
- The driver skill test may be waivered if individual completes approved motorcycle safety training
- Louisiana does NOT accept rider education completion cards from other states, but will accept motorcycle endorsement from other states
- Maximum authorized handlebar height is 15" above seat
- A mirror is required on left side
- Annual safety inspections are required by law
- Motorcycles operating two abreast in same lane IS authorized
- Lane splitting IS NOT authorized
